Matt and JJ: The Power of Love and Hockey

May 2019 – Matt and JJ’s story begins in San Diego, California while they were both assigned to Mobile Unit Three.  Too shy to talk to him directly, JJ would tell you it was love at first sight.  (Matt says he doesn’t remember this…)  They immediately bonded as friends and their mutual love of hockey.  JJ will always remember the courage it took to ask Matt to go on a trip to Boston with her for the Stanley Cup Finals.  Little did they realize; this was their last “first date.”  

Over the years they have overcome challenges of long deployments, a global pandemic, and military schools keeping them separated for extended periods of time.  Some might say, they beat the odds!

JJ would describe Matt’s toxic traits are singing the Les Misérables soundtrack / Christmas music year-round and his unhealthy obsession with the Ring Cameras.  Although, she has a deep admiration for Matt’s kindness, loyalty, crooked smile, his secret love for the dogs, and ability to make her laugh. (And lots of tattoos – sorry Dad)

Matt would describe JJ’s toxic traits are leaving doors unlocked and belief that pizza is inappropriate for dinner every night.   However, he loves how intelligent, supportive, and hardworking she is.  (And her endless repository of SpongeBob quotes)  

It is clear to say that Matt fell in love with JJ (and the Bruins) on their first trip to Boston.  Fast forward 5 ½ years later – Matt proposed to JJ in Boston Commons Public Garden after finding her “favorite tree,” a Ginkgo Biloba surrounded by beautiful golden yellow leaves.  Matt and JJ’s tree is placarded with a quote “May the light surround you,” which they believe to be foretelling of a bright and loving future.

They are SO excited to share this vacation with their closest friends and family celebrating the union of their two families.
